The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act became effective in 2011. Section 20 of the law states that individuals who have entered into a civil union are entitled to the same legal obligations, responsibilities, protections and benefits that are afforded to spouses under Illinois law.
While Illinois does not allow same-sex marriage, section 60 of the civil union law formally recognizes same-sex marriages (and similar relationships) from other states. Section 60 provides:
A marriage between persons of the same sex, a civil union, or a substantially similar legal relationship other than common law marriage, legally entered into in another jurisdiction, shall be recognized in Illinois as a civil union.
